Depth Tiers     Just as you use XP to gain tiers in Studies, you use DP to gain depth tiers. Unlike with XP, you do not have to choose between various Study areas, but you will still have major decisions to make about your character's beliefs, personality, and plans.

The details of the effects of depth tiers will be detailed in this chapter, but as a general overview, this is what you gain from tiers:

-At every tier until after 12th, you gain 1 bWILL.
-At 4th tier, you choose the philosophy your character adheres to.
-At every tier beginning at 5th tier, you obtain one Attribute.
-At every odd-numbered tier beginning at 11th tier, you emphasize one Attribute.

-At every even-numbered tier beginning at 14th tier, you gain an extra use of Willpower for a reactive +TN.

Starting Tiers

When creating a new character, you have 3 depth tiers. This is because, as an adventurer, you have already taken steps to define who you are, step out of whatever situation you were raised in, and somehow develop the motivation required to willingly risk your life on a regular basis. After all, there's a reason the campaign is focusing on you and the other characters; true legends are not born from the everyday mundane.

Of course, people in Lur-Asko begin their lives at 1st tier. The majority never even make it to 3rd tier, living predictable lives of routine and convenience. Becoming deep characters of genuine interest to history is the domain of adventurers and ambitious commoners.

DP Net Worth & Gaining Tiers     After your starting tiers, you must earn DP to gain further tiers. Every time you pass a certain threshold of DP Net Worth, you gain an additional depth tier:

You begin with a DP Net Worth of 0. The maximum depth tier is 30. However, since 4,050 DP is required for 30th tier, this is virtually unheard-of.
Depth & Willpower

By default, your bWILL is always equal to your depth tier, to a maximum of 12 (at 12th tier). Any rule that increases or decreases your bWILL also modifies your maximum bWILL at 12th tier.

Willpower can be defined not only as your ability to exceed physical expectations, but also the limitations of your instincts and conditioning. A character with low bWILL is still very much a product of their upbringing and culture, while one with 12 bWILL can be said to have become their own person.

At every even-numbered tier beginning at 14th tier, you gain an extra use of Willpower as a reactive +TN (see Rolling on Stats). For example, a character with 16 depth tiers can use Willpower to add a reactive +TN 3 times before resting. All Willpower uses are restored by the next 4-hour rest. As with all reactive +TNs, a character cannot add Willpower more than once in the same roll.
