Macska
Macska was the realm of Onnoma the Gray.
Its climate is temperate and comfortable, with
very mild winters and summers. Although it lacks
the fertility or huge forests of Manusia, it is still
sufficient for plentiful agriculture, and its coasts
and offshore reefs are home to some of the richest
aquatic ecosystems near Lur-Asko.
In the Third Alacrian Era, the city-fortress
of Vespera dominated all of Macska, and was the
leading producer of Therbolgite-derived coral
technology. The small size of the peninsula meant
that no Subject Species were settled here. When Koh-Trr colonists arrived from the Far Remote in the
modern era, the legends of their venerated Onnoma
led to them seeking out his old realm as their
new home.
Between the Fall of the Alacris and the arrival
of the Koh-Trr 912 years later, Macska’s history is
the subject of rampant speculation. Useful research
has become nearly impossible due to political
conflicts and concerns about Koh-Trr honor
constantly interfering with studies. A leading
theory created by historians from other realms is that
minotaurs built a makeshift “nation” in Macska
sometime after the Fall, and that these minotaurs were slaughtered by
the
Koh-Trr colonists to make room for their own civilization. Because this
theory of genocide
implies a blight on Koh-Trr honor, its discussion and research is
outlawed
in Macska. The Koh-Trr themselves view the theory as a form of
prejudice
against their kind, as no clear evidence of a minotaur nation has ever
been found - only an unusual amount of properly-buried minotaur remains.
Nearly all travel to and from
Macska is done by sea or air, with the exception of a few caravans that travel to Nani, which must brave the Dustbreak Galewall.
Macskan society is strongly influenced by draconic
philosophy, as well as their own cultural conception of group honor,
which consumes nearly every aspect of Koh-Trr life. Foreigners are
allowed
to visit and do business, though they are often assigned to particular
areas
of the cities and villages. Here they must often deal not only with the stigma of a foreigner, but with that of the shō
- that is, the merchant caste, who according to Koh-Trr culture
"produce nothing." Foreigners are automatically classified as shō upon
residing in Macska, unless they manage to win the attention and respect
of the authorities. Several adventuring parties have pulled off this
feat.
Macskan politics are extremely hard for
outsiders to understand.
Each city seems to be led by the house of a feudal lord called a daimyo, who
is served by several lesser nobles called samurai. Occasionally in history, one
of the daimyos rises to total dominance of Macska, and is called a shogun;
this generally only occurs during periods of war.
Major Cities
Koh-Shuto
Estimated population: 70,000
The largest city in Macska and the traditional home of any
shogun who rises. Koh-Shuto functions as a center of trade
for the peninsula, and is home to several red draconic abbeys and
martial arts academies. This city is regarded as the hardest culture
in Lur-Asko for outsiders to successfully integrate into. Most of the
non-Koh-Trr species found here are researchers, business agents, or
adventurers seeking out lucrative jobs too obscure for the rest of
Lur-Asko to find. Hopefully, they avoid being executed for honor
violations in the process.
Kohdai-Han
Estimated population: 35,000
This city has always been a bustling center of activity due to its optimal
location and wonderful climate. After building it, the Koh-Trr discovered
that it was the former epicenter of Vespera - they built their settlement
directly over the largest underground portion of the Alacrian fortress-city.
Like all Alacrian ruins, Vespera is highly dangerous. The cleared portions of
the underground ruins have a tendency to attract criminal elements, most
notably those portions of Koh-Trr society influenced by white draconic
philosophy. Above ground, Kohdai-Han conceals this presence,
and is mostly known for its sprawling fish markets.
Furusato
Estimated population: 15,000
A recent settlement, Furusato is supported mostly by the large rice
paddies that lie around the area. This agricultural city is dearly loved by
its residents, and mostly ignored by outsiders.
